Eviction in the Jericó I urbanization: what an unannounced intervention left behind

Several families in the sector were evicted by a large police contingent accompanied by a bailiff, in compliance with an order issued at the request of the State Attorney. Santo Domingo.- Early this Saturday morning, residents of the Jericó I urbanization, in Los Frailes, Santo Domingo Este, were awakened not by the sun’s rays and the little birds, but by the roar of mechanical shovels and the military announcing that they had to leave their homes. According to the community members, with tear gas and without prior warning, the morning turned gray and the military began to demolish their humble houses and small businesses, destroying everything they found in their path.

“They arrived without warning and demolished my house. I have nowhere to go. I don’t know what to do,” complained a resident of the sector for more than 4 years.

The 5 dirt streets that make up the sector are heavily militarized, with rubble, household items, clothes, wood, and zinc sheets, reflecting the magnitude of the intervention.

Furthermore, heavy traffic congestion is recorded in the area, as one of the lanes of Hipódromo Avenue is completely closed by agents of the National Police and Municipal Police, who are heavily armed.

So far, municipal authorities have not offered details about what happened, nor whether they will relocate the residents.
