Villa Altagracia.– The execution of the work to divert a stream on 30 de Marzo Street, in the Fátima sector, has not only transformed the community’s environment but has also forced several families to abandon the homes located in the intervened area.
Although residents recognize the need for the work, some of those affected claim that the eviction process has been marked by uncertainty and a lack of information regarding the aid or compensation they will receive during the project’s development.
Maribel, who resides in one of the affected homes, explained that she has to leave the place after receiving the notification that she had to vacate the property.
“I was only told that I had to move. Of course one has to leave, but in one’s own time,” he/she expressed.
The woman explained that, since she lives in a rented house, she has not received any type of financial support from the authorities and is unaware of what agreements have been reached with the owners of the demolished properties.

The resident indicated that the process has also complicated mobility in the area, due to the partial closure of the main road while construction work is underway.

Other community members consider that, in addition to completing the work, the authorities must guarantee adequate support for the families who have had to leave their homes as a result of the intervention.
The Government is carrying out these works with the purpose of correcting a historical drainage and sanitation problem in Villa Altagracia, an initiative that residents consider necessary, provided that the situation of those who have been directly affected by its execution is also addressed.
