Villa Altagracia.– Residents of the Fátima sector, on 30 de Marzo street in Villa Altagracia, praised the work being carried out by the Government to divert a stream that has affected the community for years, although they warned that the project is progressing too slowly, causing difficulties in traffic, commerce, and daily life.
The community members explained that the intervention seeks to put an end to a problem that for more than five years has kept stagnant water in the area, a situation they claim has caused bad odors, the proliferation of insects, and diseases among the residents.
Rafael Abrego, a local merchant, stated that although the construction work has reduced the flow of customers and vendors, the community remains hopeful that the project will provide a definitive solution.
“What we want is a solution because that water has been stagnant there for more than five years. The construction work is fine, but it has affected us because now few people and few vendors come,” he/she expressed.
In that same sense, another resident, identified as Edward, maintained that the intervention is necessary, but considered that the pace of execution does not correspond to the importance of one of the municipality’s main roads.

“That work is well done, but it is taking too long. This is a main street in Villa Altagracia and it cannot remain closed for so long,” he stated.

For her part, Paula, another community member, recalled that the ravine has represented a historical problem for the sector and assured that the residents hope that the authorities will conclude the work as soon as possible.
“We have had this problem for many years. There are many outbreaks, a lot of filth, and many affected houses. We want them to finally fix it,” he/she said.

The intervention is part of the sanitation and storm drainage correction projects that the Government is developing in vulnerable sectors of the municipality, with the aim of reducing flooding and improving the sanitary conditions of the communities.
As work continues, residents hope that the authorities will accelerate the execution of the project to restore normal traffic and improve the quality of life for those who have lived for years with the pollution caused by the stream.
