Santo Domingo.- Content creator Frank D. Fernández, who identifies himself as an advocate for the import, carrying, and possession of legal firearms, asked the Dominican government to relax restrictions on the import of civilian-use firearms and proposed the creation of an amnesty that would allow for the regularization of existing illegal weapons in the country.
Through a video shared on his social media, Fernández asserted that citizens who wish to acquire a weapon legally face high costs and multiple obstacles, while, as he claimed, criminals obtain firearms easily on the illegal market.
“What we want is to do things correctly, by the law. Criminals have too much ease in buying a firearm, while those of us who want to do it legally are faced with obstacles,” he expressed.
The content creator criticized the price of some weapons marketed in the country, pointing out that they are sold for more than a million pesos, even though, as he said, those same models have a significantly lower cost in the United States.

Fernández maintained that current restrictions have contributed to the growth of the illegal arms market and stated that crime has increased in recent decades. In that sense, he considered that allowing the import of legal weapons would facilitate greater control and traceability by the authorities.
Likewise, he proposed that the Government implement an amnesty so that owners of illegal weapons can register and legalize them, arguing that such a measure would increase tax revenue and allow for greater control over those weapons.
“There is going to be more control, more traceability, and more tax collection. The Government could recover billions of pesos,” he stated.

During his speech, he also questioned the Government’s policy on firearms and expressed his hope that the authorities would reconsider the current restrictions on imports.
