Santo Domingo. – Businessman and media personality Santiago Matías stated that, if he reaches the Presidency of the Republic in the 2028 elections, he will repeal the measure that restricts the importation of firearms into the country, considering that this situation harms citizens and companies that seek to acquire them legally.
Through a video shared on his social media, Matías maintained that there is currently a marked difference between the cost of weapons acquired illegally by criminals and the price that those who wish to purchase them in compliance with the law must pay.
“It is inconceivable that antisocial criminals have access to firearms for 50,000, 60,000, or 70,000 pesos, while companies and ordinary Dominicans are buying, for example, a Glock for a million pesos,” he expressed.
The communicator attributed this difference to the ban on importing firearms into the Dominican Republic, noting that the measure limits access to more affordable options for those seeking to protect themselves within the legal framework.
In that sense, he assured that, if he becomes president in 2028, he will eliminate that restriction to facilitate the legal acquisition of firearms.

“In the year 2028, God willing, this measure will be repealed. There will be access to security, to your own security, in a cheap, legal, and safe way,” he stated.
Matías’ statements come amid the debate over citizen security and the regulation of access to firearms in the Dominican Republic. His proposal has generated reactions on social media, where users have expressed positions both in favor of and against easing the importation of weapons.
