Santo Domingo.– The Broad Front (Frente Amplio) announced the holding of its seventh protest march in Santo Domingo Norte, with the purpose of demanding that the Government adopt urgent measures to reduce the high cost of living, lower the prices of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as put an end to the police abuses that affect the population.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, spokesperson Fidelia Rincón stated that the difficult economic situation facing thousands of Dominican families is no longer just a complaint from opposition sectors, but a reality confirmed by opinion polls, by merchants, and by the consumers themselves who face the rising cost of basic necessities daily.
He maintained that the growing deterioration of the purchasing power of Dominican families has been confirmed both by opinion studies and by the reality experienced daily by merchants and consumers. He cited that the recent National Public Opinion Survey published by the media group ACDMedia establishes that 62% of the population identifies the high cost of living as the main national problem, while journalistic reports show a decrease in sales in markets due to the sustained increase in prices.
“The population feels that their salary goes less far every time. Today, families have to buy less food, substitute essential products, and limit their expenses because the money no longer stretches. That is a reality that no one can hide,” the political leader stated.
The Broad Front (Frente Amplio) explained that, although the Government has implemented recent reductions in some fuels, these barely compensate for a small part of the sharp increases accumulated since May. It recalled that premium gasoline and optimal diesel reached accumulated increases of RD$45.00 per gallon, while regular gasoline and regular diesel increased by RD$35.00 per gallon, a situation that continues to impact the cost of transportation, production, and the distribution of essential goods.
In that sense, the organization called on the citizenry to participate in the seventh protest-walk, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at 4:00 in the afternoon, starting from the Fire Station (Los Multis), in Guaricano, as part of a series of mobilizations that it has been carrying out for a year in different municipalities of the country in defense of the population’s purchasing power and democratic rights.

“Today, it is not only the opposition denouncing the high cost of living; so are the polls, merchants, housewives, and consumers who leave the markets every week with less food and more money spent,” stated Fidelia. The cost-of-living crisis constitutes the main economic and social problem currently facing the majority of Dominican households, she continued.
The organization called on the residents of Santo Domingo Norte, neighborhood associations, community organizations, merchants, workers, youth, and women to join the mobilization, reiterating that only through citizen participation will it be possible to promote public policies aimed at protecting the purchasing power of Dominican families.
