Panama City .- Google announced this Tuesday a digital infrastructure, dubbed ‘Americas Connect’, which contemplates the deployment of three new submarine cables in the Caribbean and the Pacific to reinforce connectivity between America, the Caribbean region, and Europe.
The new infrastructure consists of the ‘Alisios’ cable, which connects the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile; ‘Canoa’, which links the Dominican Republic with Bermuda, and ‘OlaLuz’, which will connect the Dominican Republic with Florida (southern U.S.), according to a statement released in Panama.
In addition to this, Google will establish a branch of the ‘Firmina’ submarine cable to the Dominican Republic to increase the reach of that infrastructure, designed to connect North America with South America.
In parallel, the existing submarine routes -‘Curie’, ‘Nuvem’ and ‘Sol’- will be interconnected with the new paths to create redundant network rings to the United States and Europe, according to information from the tech giant.
In the Pacific Ocean, a “subsea ring” will create redundant routes that will connect Chile to Panama, along with a third link from the Central American country to the U.S. West Coast, providing connectivity to Google Cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

Across the Caribbean Sea, the ‘Alisios’ cable (named after the winds of that area) runs from Panama to the Dominican Republic to also connect via a ring from the Caribbean island to the U.S. East Coast and the Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia.
There, both ‘Alisios’ and the ‘Firmina’ branch will converge in the Caribbean country with the ‘OlaLuz’ cable (whose name combines the words “wave” and “light” in reference to fiber optics) which will link directly to the southern coast of the United States (Florida).

In the Atlantic Ocean, the ‘Canoa’ submarine cable (a word of Taíno origin), which runs from the Dominican Republic to Bermuda, will be interconnected with the ‘Nuvem’ and ‘Sol’ cables through rings to both the United States and Madrid, providing connectivity to both Europe and America.

All of this under the umbrella of ‘Americas Connect’, a project that “improves the reach, reliability, and resilience of connectivity by offering diversity in subsea cable routes and connectivity to geographically separate Google Cloud regions,” according to the statement.
