Government delivers rural electrification projects with an investment exceeding RD$56 million in Elías Piña

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, announced other projects for more than RD$15 million and the installation of 2,700 streetlights in the province Elías Piña.- The Dominican Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines, delivered several photovoltaic rural electrification projects in the communities of Las Yamayas, La Peña, Rincón, Caratá, Rossó and Pachutico, in the province of Elías Piña, with an investment that exceeds RD$56 million, to benefit more than 187 families in the municipality of Pedro Santana. In Caratá, Rossó, and Pachutico, 130 families and a community center benefited from the installation of 178 solar panels of 550 Wp each, equipped with an inverter, regulator, internal storage, and microgrid, with a total power of 97.9 kWp. Also, 524 light bulbs, 655 electrical outlets, and 15,000 meters of cable were installed, with a total investment of RD$27,744,960. In Las Yamayas, the second phase of electrification was completed, and in La Peña and Rincón, the first phase was completed, in which 56 homes were electrified with the installation of 96 solar panels of 505 Wp, equipped with an inverter, regulator, internal storage and micro grid, with a total power of 48.48 kWp. In addition, 240 light bulbs, 160 electrical outlets and 10,700 meters of cable were installed, with a total investment of RD$29,005,048.83.

In heading the delivery act, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, highlighted the Government’s commitment, led by President Luis Abinader, to provide the population with inclusive and equitable energy, bringing electricity to rural communities to improve their quality of life.

“These projects are part of a broader vision of the Dominican Government, headed by President Luis Abinader, aimed at closing territorial gaps and guaranteeing universal access to energy,” Santos expressed.

He informed that the works were executed by the Rural and Suburban Electrification Directorate (DERS), thanks to the joint effort of the State and strategic allies such as non-profit associations (ASFL), the Dominican Institute for Integral Development (IDDI) and Guakia Ambiente, who provided technical advice and support in the works.

Senator from Elías Piña, Johnson Encarnación, and the provincial governor, Magdaly de los Santos, highlighted the impact that the arrival of electricity has on the lives of the inhabitants of the benefited communities, with solutions that strengthen their dignity and their opportunities for progress and productive development. Whereas, David Luther, CEO of IDDI, and Michela Izzo, CEO of Guakia Ambiente, pointed out that these institutions are committed to the expansion of sustainable electricity service, which is why they are available to continue promoting, together with the State, access to clean energy in other parts of the territory that have opportunities to take advantage of their natural resources to produce well-being. While community members from the affected localities thanked the authorities for the installation of the equipment and pledged to take care of it and use it properly to take advantage of all the benefits they receive since it began operating.

New projects

The Minister of Energy and Mines announced that among the projects scheduled for execution in the 2026–2027 period are the extension of electrical networks in the communities of Cañada Barrero and La Tinaja, in the municipality of Juan Santiago, divided into two sections, with an investment of RD$15,567,659.21. He said that progress is being made in the process of launching new network electrification initiatives and the installation of more than 2,700 luminaires in municipalities such as Bánica, Comendador, Juan Santiago and Guayabo. He added that seven other key projects for the province of Elías Piña are also being evaluated, including the electrification of networks that will impact areas such as Carrizal to the Puello section, in Comendador and Los Cerros de Potroso, Potro Blanco, in Sabana Larga.
