“Health authorities report a reduction in maternal and infant mortality”

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Health reported that maternal and infant mortality shows a reduction during the year 2026, while the main epidemiological indicators remain at low levels and within what is expected for the season.

According to the corresponding epidemiological bulletin, maternal mortality records 57 cumulative deaths in 2026, a figure lower than the 86 reported during the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, infant deaths reach 697 cumulative cases, below the 768 registered in the same period of 2025, which evidences a downward trend in these sensitive public health indicators.

The institution explained that these results are being kept under follow-up through the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance and the timely monitoring of the behavior of these events.

Likewise, he reported that, in addition to the circulation of respiratory viruses at usual levels, other events of health interest also show favorable behavior, with significant decreases in the incidence of diseases such as malaria and contained figures for dengue, leptospirosis, among others.

The Health institution indicated that epidemiological surveillance contributes to detecting any change in disease transmission patterns of importance to public health.

The aforementioned bulletin reports that during Epidemiological Week 23, three cases of dengue were confirmed, corresponding to residents of the provinces of La Altagracia, San Juan, and La Romana. The cumulative total amounts to 125 confirmed cases so far this year, a figure that reflects low circulation of the virus compared to previous periods.

Health authorities are implementing the relevant control measures to prevent the transmission of the disease and are constantly carrying out community interventions aimed at eliminating breeding sites and preventing outbreaks.

Regarding leptospirosis, four cases were confirmed during the week in the provinces of Distrito Nacional, Monte Plata, and Santo Domingo, for a cumulative total of 179 confirmed cases.

Although the disease maintains a presence in the territory, the indicators remain contained, while the Ministry reinforces actions of surveillance, early detection, environmental sanitation, and community education, especially during the rainy season.
