Washington.- US President Donald Trump warned Mexican authorities on Wednesday that, “if they don’t do their job” against drug trafficking, Washington will.
The Republican leader made these statements at an event at the White House, amid bilateral tension after he has hinted on several occasions at the possibility of intervening in Mexican territory to combat the cartels, an option that the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum rejects.
“The entry of drugs by sea has decreased by 97%, and now we have launched the ground force, which is much simpler. You will hear some complaints from people in Mexico and other places, but if they are not going to do their job, we will do it,” he affirmed.
Drug trafficking, constant tension between Trump and Mexico
Since Trump’s return to the White House, the fight against drug trafficking, especially fentanyl trafficking, has become one of the main priorities of the United States, which has declared the main cartels of Mexico as terrorist organizations.

Although he has praised the relationship with Sheinbaum, Trump has insisted on the need for the United States to intervene in Mexican territory, something that the Mexican Executive rejects by appealing to national sovereignty.
The new statements come at a particularly delicate moment for bilateral relations, following a state anti-drug operation carried out in April in Chihuahua in which CIA agents participated without prior knowledge of the federal government of Mexico.
Furthermore, they occur after the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, was accused of drug trafficking by a US federal court.
Rocha Moya, a member of Morena, Sheinbaum’s party, is accused along with nine other officials of crimes related to drug and arms trafficking.
For its part, Mexico has assured that, although the United States has requested detention for extradition purposes, it has not presented “evidence” of its guilt.
