Two weeks after the death of the 53-year-old actor, remembered for his participation in the popular series “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria”, the death certificate, which People magazine had access to, came to light, indicating that the cause of death was respiratory failure. Eric, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease with no cure that progressively weakens the body’s muscles, including the respiratory ones, had been diagnosed in 2025. The actor died at the age of 53, after an intense battle against this condition. ALS advanced aggressively and rapidly deteriorated her physical condition. The first signs manifested with the immobility of her right arm and, subsequently, the condition spread to her legs. With the passing of months, she needed to use a wheelchair and began to have complications speaking and swallowing. Her colleague in Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey, shared that he visited her during her last week of life and that she had almost completely lost the ability to communicate verbally.

Before his death, the actor recorded an episode of the documentary “Famous Last Words” for Netflix. During his participation, Dane reviewed his career and spoke openly about his battle against ALS, as well as insisting on the need to allocate more resources to research to find a cure.
“It’s a money problem. If they had unlimited funds to investigate, we would find a quick solution to this. There are only 31,000 people with ALS in this country, there are 340 million people in the United States. It’s hard to understand the concept of a single life and how it affects others. I still can’t believe this is happening to me; it’s weird, you know? I never thought this would be the end of my path, it was never part of the story I created for myself. I never thought I would go through something as crazy and deadly as ALS. Why would I have this? I’m healthy. But I don’t feel sorry for myself, but for my daughters, for Rebecca and for my friends. But not for me,” he told Brad Falchuk, already noting his difficulties in speaking.
