Jim Carrey, honorary César award: “Each character you embody is like the sculptor’s clay”

Paris.- Actor Jim Carrey received an honorary César award this Thursday at the 51st edition of the awards the most important of French cinema, where he assured that «cach character you embody is like the sculptor’s clay», which he shapes from the «bottom of his heart».

The comedian, of Canadian origin and naturalized American, dedicated the award to his father, “the funniest man” he ever knew, and also mentioned his ancestors, several generations ago, who emigrated from Saint-Malo (France) to Canada. “Perhaps it’s what my family was looking for,” Carrey said on stage, referring to the cubic trophy, with which he considered he was doing the “squaring of the circle” that his ancestors had initiated. The protagonist of iconic titles such as ‘The Truman Show’ or ‘Ace Ventura’ dared to speak French, with great effort, but his lack of practice with the language of Molière served him to add an extra point of humor to his speech: “How was my French? More than mediocre, right?”, he launched to the audience of the Olympia theater in Paris.

Carrey, 64 years old and born in Newmarket (Canada), thanked his entire family for their support and defended before the audience, which received him with a standing ovation, that “life is parody”.

A Tribute to Jim Carrey’s Career

The gala was full of jokes and small tributes to the two-time Golden Globe winner, starting with the opening, in which the ceremony’s presenter, the French actor Benjamin Lavernhe, transformed into his character from ‘The Mask’ to dance dressed in yellow. The award was presented first by the French actress Camille Cottin, who served as president of the ceremony and especially praised Carrey’s ability to stretch his face, “beyond gravity and dignity, sometimes”, with a “supernatural technique”. But above all, he celebrated that he is an actor with the ability to portray fragility and vulnerability, sometimes histrionic, without ever judging it: “You remind us that ridicule is not a fault.” In addition to Cottin, French director Michel Gondry also appeared on stage to present the award, with whom she worked on the cult film ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’. Gondry shared anecdotes about his experience with Carrey, praised his acting ability, and also shared more difficult moments with a happy ending, such as an occasion when the actor lost his temper and yelled at him in front of the whole team, to which he replied: “If you yell at me I can’t love you and if I don’t love you I can’t direct you”, before concluding the discussion with a hug.

The French director also couldn’t resist injecting a bit of humor and appeared first with a supposed portrait of Jim Carrey which was in reality just a pun in French: a painting of several people in a gym of square dimensions (‘carré’).
