Santo Domingo.– The family of the child José Rafael Llenas Aybar opened an account on Instagram under the name @joserafaelporsiempre to keep his memory alive, just as 30 years have passed since his murder and a few days before the release from prison of Mario José Redondo Llenas, scheduled for this May 5. The recently created account already gathers several posts and videos that show memories of José Rafael’s childhood, including family moments, birthdays, school activities, and happy scenes with his parents. “Account to remember the life of José Rafael Llenas Aybar. The so-called “Llenas Aybar Case” deeply marked Dominican society in 1996. José Rafael, 11 years old, was kidnapped in Santo Domingo by Mario José Redondo Llenas, who demanded money in exchange for his release. However, despite the family’s attempts, the minor was murdered, causing great national shock due to the brutality of the act and the social link between both families. The judicial process captured the country’s attention for months and culminated in the sentencing of Redondo Llenas to 30 years in prison, the maximum sentence contemplated at the time. Three decades later, the case remains one of the most remembered crimes in the Dominican Republic, both for its social impact and for the debate it generated about justice, security, and social differences in the country. Mario José Redondo Llenas will regain his freedom this Tuesday, after serving his entire sentence.
