Santo Domingo.- The founder of the Opción Democrática party (OD) Minou Tavárez Mirabal denounced the democratic setbacks the country is going through and called for the recovery of politics as a space for social transformation.

“Es necesario recordar que nos toca hacer política en un país atravesado por la incoherencia de un gobierno improvisador y errático, con una clara tendencia al retroceso en materia de los derechos humanos y de las conquistas democráticas que tanto nos han costado”,

expresó.
He also said that the government lacks social and environmental sensitivity, promotes the privatization of public goods, and has sought to impose a regressive tax reform; without an organic collective procedure, and with a severe inability to develop articulated plans and social intervention programs. “We have to do politics in the midst of global uncertainty, facing a neoliberal system that has emptied democracy of content and has promoted hate speech, denialism and exclusion,” he pointed out. In that context, he reaffirmed Option Democrática’s commitment to a caring, inclusive and profoundly egalitarian democracy.

In an event for the 10th anniversary of OD, Minou called on the militancy to grow “like yeast in the dough”, expanding into universities, unions, neighborhood councils, and community spaces.

“This is a living party, under permanent construction, it is an infinite horizon that serves us to walk, to reach power and to make the dream of a new Quisqueya come true,” he expressed.

The act concluded with a call for the unity of the Dominican people and the active defense of fundamental rights. “Politics must recover its capacity for utopia. It is not just about winning elections, but about transforming the Dominican Republic into a more just, supportive, and livable place for everyone,” he stated.
