Monorail works cause new floods on Las Carreras Avenue in Santiago

Santiago.- The intense rains recorded on the afternoon of this Saturday again caused severe flooding on Las Carreras Avenue and surrounding areas, a situation that residents and drivers attribute to the construction work of the Santiago Monorail. The overflow of rainwater also affected 27 de Febrero Avenue and José María Benedicto Street, near the José María Cabral y Báez Hospital, where even some areas of the health center were impacted. Vehicle traffic collapsed at several points and at least some vehicles were partially flooded. This is the second time that significant flooding has been reported in the area, linked to the execution of the mass transit project. According to community members’ complaints, during the construction, several drainage systems had become obstructed, which worsens the management of water during periods of rain.

Drivers and residents expressed their discomfort by pointing out that they have had to look for alternative routes to avoid damage to their vehicles and major setbacks. Criticism was also directed at the authorities responsible for the project, considering that they have not corrected in time the failures in the drainage system affected by the construction. So far, no human damage has been reported, although those affected insist that the situation repeats itself every time heavy rains are recorded in the city.
