Santo Domingo.– A Dominican mother identified as Yudelka Brito requested the intervention of national and Spanish authorities to be able to reunite and reestablish communication with her minor daughter, who resides in Spain under the care of a maternal aunt and with whom, she claims, she has not had contact for nine years.
Through a video, Brito recounted that she traveled to Spain with her two daughters through a family reunification process when the girl was six years old. Subsequently, she stated, she had to return temporarily to the Dominican Republic to attend to a situation related to her other daughter, leaving the youngest in the care of her aunt.
“I haven’t spoken to her in nine years, nor do I know anything about her”, expressed the woman, who maintains that since she returned to the country she has not been able to regain contact with the girl.
In support of his claim, Brito showed documents corresponding to various procedures carried out during the last few years before Dominican and Spanish institutions.
Among these is an official letter dated June 12, 2023, from the Office of the Prosecutor for Children and Adolescents of the Monseñor Nouel Judicial District, addressed to the then-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez. In the document, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requests the summons of a woman identified as Elizabeth Ramos Mercedes, noted as the maternal aunt of the minor, to appear before that office.

The official document states that the summons was scheduled for September 28, 2023, and notes that the girl was residing with her aunt in Spain. Likewise, it includes the allegation that the mother claimed her relative refused to maintain contact with her and to send the minor to the Dominican Republic.
Brito states that, despite that management, the situation has not been resolved. “I have gone to the Prosecutor’s Office, they have sent her a subpoena and she has not come to the country”, he maintained.

Among the documents presented, there is also an appeal addressed to the Consulate General of Spain in Santo Domingo, related to the denial of a visa application. In that document, Brito stated that his main reason for traveling to Spain was to meet his daughter and subsequently return with her to the Dominican Republic.

The woman stated that she has applied for a visa on several occasions, without success, which, as she explains, has hindered her attempts to travel personally to seek a solution.
“I have fought so hard and spent a lot of money and I have not been able to resolve my case. I ask you to help me, please”, he/she expressed.
Brito also indicated that he went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in search of alternatives to achieve his daughter’s return, but assured that he also failed to resolve the situation through that channel.
The mother explained that her financial limitations have prevented her from hiring lawyers who can continuously take on the process and follow up on the case in both the Dominican Republic and Spain.
The documents shown also include a notarial deed from 2017 executed in Navarre, Spain, which is part of the case background.
Given the lack of contact with his daughter, Brito is now requesting that the competent authorities intervene and determine the appropriate legal channels to ensure he can learn the current situation of the minor and re-establish communication with her.
