In a manifesto, the left-wing organization proposes that the youth should be educated on the patrician’s thought
SANTO DOMINGO. As this Monday, January 26th, marks the 213th anniversary of the birth of the patriot Juan Pablo Duarte, the Dominican Popular Movement (
MPD) called on the Dominican people and especially the youth, to revere the legacy of the founder of the Dominican Republic.
In a manifesto signed by its Political Commission, released on the occasion of the historic date, the leftist organization states that “
it is extremely necessary to raise the figure of Duarte, without ceasing to express our firm rejection of the instrumentalization that the patrician has been consciously subjected to by the reactionary political, military and cultural powers of the country“.
The MPD indicates that all governments of the Dominican Republic, from before the tyrant Trujillo, continuing through the despotic enlightened Joaquín Balaguer, to the last ones of Leonel Fernández, Danilo Medina and the present of Luis Abinader have spoiled the libertarian and independence legacies of Juan Pablo Duarte.
Consider that the opportunistic practices of those governments must be reversed through popular and revolutionary education, directed in principle at the youth, and later to all the Dominican people.
“Political-cultural cynicism can be seen on each anniversary of his birth or death on July 15, 1876, in the sister Republic of Venezuela, now Bolivarian. The place where he ended up after his last forced exile. In that brother country he died in severe hardship and misery,” underlines the oldest organization of the Dominican left.
It highlights that they do not teach this to young students, workers, and peasants, because they would have to explain the real reasons for that atrocious life. Different from what the cynical intellectual and politician named Joaquín Balaguer intentionally recounts in “The Christ of Freedom.”
“In this historic moment, which the Bolivarian people of Venezuela are experiencing, we evoke the legacies of Duarte in the face of the hypocritical nationalists and neo-fascists, nested in the politics and intellectual culture of some charlatans in our academic world; in particular in our beloved Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD),” states the Marxist-Leninist organization.
The Dominican Popular Movement (MPD) is proud of the historical figure of Juan Pablo Duarte and expresses its decision to continue the libertarian and independence task of the Father of the Nation, initiated after founding La Trinitaria until relatively achieving independence or separation not only from the reactionary Haitian power, but also from the onerous imperialist powers such as France, England and in part from the decadent Spain; which currently, along with Yankee imperialism, still have their claws stuck in our homeland.
“While Duarte was protected on more than one occasion by Venezuela, today the current Dominican president Luis Abinader dishonors him with his lackey collaboration, serving as support on our land to attack Venezuela, militarily and politically by North American imperialism under the direction of Donald Trump,” he proclaims.
The MPD understands that revolutionaries and progressive allies must honor Duarte and solidify unity beyond the tactical; while raising the flag for the freedom of President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, both kidnapped on the morning of January 3, 2026, by US military commandos.
