Santo Domingo.– This Monday, January 26th, the Dominican Republic commemorates the 213th anniversary of the birth of Juan Pablo Duarte, Father of the Nation and main ideologue of National Independence, whose thought and sacrifice laid the foundations of the Republic proclaimed on February 27, 1844.
Juan Pablo Duarte was born on January 26, 1813, in Santo Domingo. From an early age, he showed a deep patriotic vocation, intellectually forming himself in Europe, where he assimilated liberal and republican ideas that he later adapted to the Dominican reality. Upon his return to the country, he led the fight for separation from Haitian rule, founding in 1838 the secret society La Trinitaria, along with Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella, with the aim of forging a free, sovereign, and independent nation.
Despite his decisive role in the independence effort, Duarte was persecuted and forced to live a large part of his life in exile, mainly in Venezuela, where he died on July 15, 1876, in conditions of economic precariousness. His remains were repatriated in 1884 and today rest in the Altar de la Patria, along with those of Sánchez and Mella, as a symbol of the eternal recognition of the nation.
During this date, educational, cultural, and governmental institutions hold commemorative events, civic parades, floral offerings, and educational activities in honor of the patriot, highlighting his ethics, honesty, and firm commitment to freedom and democracy. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture develop special sessions to reinforce knowledge of his legacy among children and young people.

Duarte rejected political and military positions
Despite his leadership, Duarte refused on several occasions to assume public or military positions that would involve imposing his will by force, because he firmly believed in the sovereignty of the people and respect for the Constitution.
He was declared a “traitor” in his own country
After Independence, conservative sectors accused him of conspiring against the new State, which led to his expulsion from the country in 1844, one of the greatest historical injustices committed against the Father of the Nation.
He is the author of foundational phrases of the Dominican ideal
Duarte left writings and thoughts that today are part of the national ideology, such as his conception of a Republic “free and independent of all foreign domination”, the philosophical basis of the Dominican State.
Never married nor had recognized children
Duarte dedicated his life entirely to the cause of independence and died without leaving direct descendants, but his legacy is considered the moral heritage of the entire Dominican nation.
His family was key in financing the Independence
The Duarte-Díez family sacrificed a large part of their fortune to support the revolutionary activities, practically ending up in ruin as a consequence of the economic support for the independence cause.
