The two crew members replaced a wrist joint of the arm that failed on May 27, when it recorded “high current consumption in the motor and did not move as expected,” the United States space agency reported in its live broadcast.

Williams and Meir exited the orbital laboratory at 8:20 a.m. U.S. Eastern time (12:20 GMT), and concluded the spacewalk at 15:40 (19:40 GMT), after 7 hours and 20 minutes of work.

After the repair, NASA’s mission control in Houston turned the arm back on and checked its connections. In the coming days, controllers will begin moving it to continue verifying that it is operating normally.

For Williams, it was her second spacewalk and for Meir, the fifth, and the 280th in support of the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station, according to NASA.
