Panama City.- The Panamanian Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) reported this Sunday that, in coordination with the National Aeronaval Service (Senan), it seized 300 packages of alleged illicit substance during an operation carried out southwest of Isla del Rey, in the Panamanian Pacific.
The drug was found aboard a vessel intercepted by the authorities, in which two people were traveling, who were apprehended and placed at the disposal of the relevant authorities for the respective investigations, highlights the note from the Prosecutor’s Office.
The authorities did not specify the type of drug seized or the total weight of the shipment. However, according to official data, in this type of operation the packages usually weigh approximately one kilogram each, with cocaine being the substance most trafficked through the maritime routes that cross Panama.
The Central American country is considered one of the main transit routes for drugs produced in South America destined for the United States —the largest consumer of cocaine in the world— and Europe.
In 2024, Panama seized around 80 tons of illicit substances, according to official figures.
