Santo Domingo. – The Banco Popular Dominicano announced that its gnial credit and debit cards will be manufactured with plastic recovered from the coasts of Sánchez, Samaná province, in an initiative developed together with the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans.

This initiative is part of Banco Popular’s sustainability and responsible banking strategy, which incorporates circular economy principles into the development of financial products and promotes the active participation of its clients in actions that contribute to the preservation of the environment.

In this way, the new gnial cards generate a positive social impact by involving local communities in plastic collection and recovery efforts. Likewise, it will allow cardholders to donate their Popular Miles to support initiatives for the protection of coastal ecosystems and the reduction of plastic waste in the Dominican Republic, developed by Parley for the Oceans.

For every Popular Miles donation made to Parley for the Oceans, Banco Popular and the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), through the Marena Fund, will match that contribution, tripling the resources allocated to ocean conservation initiatives.

The executive president of Banco Popular, Mr. Christopher Paniagua, stated that the evolution of gnial cards responds to the purpose of integrating financial innovation with sustainability and generating a positive impact for new generations.

“With this initiative, we connect two fundamental purposes for our organization: offering relevant financial solutions for our youth and actively contributing to the protection of our marine ecosystems. Transforming plastic recovered from the Dominican coasts into an everyday product demonstrates that innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” he/she expressed.

Benefits for a new generation

The gnial credit card has a preferential interest rate and reduced fees. It is aimed at young people between 18 and 34 years old. Its incorporation will be carried out gradually during the renewal and replacement processes of the cards, at no additional cost to customers.

The change does not modify the product conditions, so the credit limits, contactless payment technology (contactless), and current benefits remain in effect.

Among these benefits is a five percent refund or cashback in categories such as fast food, digital games, streaming platforms, movie theaters, veterinary clinics, and Airbnb, with a monthly refund cap of RD$1,000.

Likewise, the card maintains the double accumulation of Popular Miles on purchases made at sports and recreational establishments, universities, bookstores, and purchases on Amazon and Apple, while the rest of the purchases continue to generate miles according to the program’s conditions. The product also offers free issuance and renewal, among other benefits.
