Bonao.– The Episcopal Vicariate of the Monseñor Nouel Pastoral Zone and the Diocesan Commission for the Environment called on the authorities to order the immediate cessation of aggregate extraction activities on the banks of the Yuna and Camú rivers, considering that these operations represent a concern for the conservation of natural resources in both provinces.
During a meeting with press representatives and members of the community, the priests supported the decision adopted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to temporarily suspend material extraction operations in the rivers, streams, and other watercourses of the Monseñor Nouel and La Vega provinces.
The director of the Pastoral Care for the Environment of the Diocese of La Vega, Yonny Durán, explained that the Ministry’s provision establishes the provisional suspension of these activities while an inter-institutional technical commission holds meetings with local authorities and the different sectors involved, with the aim of evaluating the situation and defining the corresponding actions.

Likewise, he pointed out that the measure also contemplates the temporary suspension of permits related to channeling, riverbed cleaning, and the use of aggregates authorized for mitigation works, risk management, and other projects executed by State institutions in both provinces.

Representatives of the Catholic Church stated that the protection of rivers constitutes a shared responsibility among authorities, social organizations, and the citizenry, and therefore urged for the strengthening of actions aimed at guaranteeing the preservation of water resources and environmental balance.
The activity was attended by the parish priest of the Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Rovinson Mejía, as well as priest Nicolás Suazo, from the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish, who reiterated their commitment to the defense of the environment and the promotion of initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of the province.
