OSLO, Norway.– An Oslo court sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, to four years in prison this Monday after finding him guilty of two cases of rape and committing violence against one of his ex-partners.
The ruling puts an end to one of the most closely followed judicial processes in Norway in recent months. Although Høiby, 29, was acquitted of two other rape charges, the judges considered several of the crimes presented by the Prosecutor’s Office to be proven.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office had requested a sentence of seven years and seven months in prison, maintaining that the accused faced around 40 charges related to sexual assault, violence, and other crimes. For its part, the defense requested acquittal on the most serious charges and acknowledged responsibility only for some minor incidents.
Among the charges previously admitted by Høiby are threats and the transport of marijuana, infractions that were also taken into account during the process.
After the ruling was announced, the convicted person’s lawyers reported that they will appeal the decision to a higher court.

The Royal House of Norway avoided commenting on the content of the ruling. In statements made to local media, the Palace merely pointed out that it is a matter resolved by the courts and that it will not make any further comments.
Although he is the son of Princess Mette-Marit, Marius Borg Høiby is not part of the working royal family nor does he hold official responsibilities within the Norwegian monarchy.
