Baseball: The Heart of Rivalry

Baseball is the stage where rivalry reaches its maximum expression. Both islands are world powers in the production of Major League talent, which makes each clash a high-level event. The clashes in the Caribbean Series, as well as in the World Baseball Classic, have defined iconic moments for both nations. The 2013 Classic final, in which the Dominican Republic was crowned undefeated champion against Puerto Rico, is one of the most remembered episodes. Even exhibition matches spark massive enthusiasm, as happened in November 2025 at Citi Field in New York during the “RD vs PR ShowDown”, where more than 20,000 fans attended to witness a duel that reaffirmed the magnitude of this rivalry on US soil.

Basketball: intensity from start to finish

In basketball, the story is just as vibrant. Both countries have faced each other in multiple FIBA, AmeriCup, Centrobasket, and World Cup qualifying tournaments. Each game is played as if it were a final, regardless of whether it’s a friendly or an official competition.

Brothers, but rivals

Despite the intensity, the PR–RD rivalry is marked by a deep mutual respect. Singers, athletes, and personalities from both islands have emphasized that this competition strengthens Caribbean brotherhood and motivates raising the sporting level. Historical ties —from the Taíno connection to the migratory exchanges of the 19th century— add to the national pride that both bring to the field and the court.
