Ramfis Trujillo criticizes CES’s approach to the Haitian crisis and demands concrete actions

Santo Domingo.- Ramfis Domínguez Trujillo, political leader, expressed this Thursday his discontent with the development of the session of the Economic and Social Council (CES) headed by President Luis Abinader, considering that the meeting did not allow a real participation of the convened sectors nor did it address in depth the severity of the migratory crisis facing the country.

“Vinimos con un plan migratorio que diseñamos hace más de 12 años, llamado Plan 27 de Febrero, con 25 medidas concretas. Queríamos entregárselo al presidente, pero vemos que esto se ha convertido en una plataforma simbólica sin acciones reales”, declaró Trujillo.

In that sense, he pointed out that this initiative of the CES seems to have been a response to occupy the space of national dialogue that his movement presented weeks ago. He assured that the official discourse “falls short” of the people’s expectations.

Trujillo questioned the data offered by the president on the deportations of illegal Haitians: “Talking about 40,000 monthly deportations is not realistic“.

Migration can barely handle about 15 thousand. We need to triple that capacity, drop the screens and start working seriously.”

The politician insisted on the urgency of dismantling the labor informality associated with illegal migration, pointing out that more than 500,000 jobs held by Haitians are not regulated nor do they contribute to the treasury. He proposed that, if formalized, the taxes collected could be used to subsidize the hiring of Dominican labor. He also criticized the attempt to modify article 139 of the Labor Code, which, in his opinion, would facilitate the mass legalization of illegal workers. “We have to prepare Dominicans, especially for the agricultural sector, which has become less profitable for them.”

Finally, he called to take advantage of the support of the United States in border control and to replace rhetoric with firm actions. “
