Red Sox are one win away from the record after beating Orioles 6-5

BOSTON. – The Boston Red Sox were on the verge of tying the franchise’s consecutive win record after defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 this Monday, thanks to a decisive home run by Caleb Durbin in the eighth inning.

Durbin broke the tie with a home run over Fenway Park’s Green Monster off a pitch from reliever Tyler Wells, sparking a celebration from the 37,659 fans in attendance and securing Boston’s fourteenth consecutive victory.

With the victory, the Red Sox improved their record to 19-2 since June 25 and are just one win away from tying the franchise record of 15 consecutive victories, set in 1946. Additionally, they ended the Orioles’ seven-game winning streak.

The home run was the tenth of the season for Durbin, who is going through the best moment of his career. The third baseman has hit safely in 31 of his last 44 games, accumulating 20 extra-base hits and nine home runs during that period.

Boston also took advantage of Baltimore’s defensive errors to tip the scales in their favor. In the third inning, a throwing error by second baseman Jeremiah Jackson allowed Ceddanne Rafaela to reach base. Immediately after, Wilyer Abreu hit an RBI double and another error, this time by shortstop Gunnar Henderson, made it easier for Venezuelan Willson Contreras to drive in another run with an infield single.

On the mound, rookie Payton Tolle delivered a solid performance over 5.2 innings, although he lost the lead in the sixth inning after allowing four runs. The left-hander gave up eight hits, issued one walk, and struck out nine batters before handing over the relief.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the matchup between Boston and Baltimore was just the fifth since 1961 in which two teams faced each other while both arrived with active winning streaks of at least seven consecutive games.

The Red Sox will now look to extend their impressive momentum and write a new chapter in the franchise’s history as they attempt to match the 15-game winning streak record in their next matchup.
