Tokyo.- Chipmaker Samsung Electronics reached a record net profit of 71.6 trillion won (approximately 49 billion dollars) in the second quarter of 2026, driven by strong global demand for semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI).

This figure represents a 1,300% increase compared to the same period of the previous year, when the South Korean firm’s net profit was 5.12 trillion won, as detailed by Samsung in its financial report this Thursday.

The South Korean tech giant’s operating profit reached a record high of 89.5 trillion won between April and June, compared to the 4.7 trillion won recorded in the same period the previous year, representing an increase of 1,800%.

Sales revenue also recorded a quarterly record of 171.5 trillion won, which is almost 130% more than in the second quarter of 2025.

The semiconductor division posted an operating profit of 89.2 trillion won, which offset the lower revenue recorded in the mobile phone sector.

The company emphasized that the results in the memory business are explained by the “proactive response” to the demand for AI servers.

Following the release of financial data, Samsung Electronics shares soared 7.19% two hours after the start of trading on the South Korean Stock Exchange, boosting its main index, the Kospi, by over 3% after several consecutive days of sharp declines due to losses in the technology sector amid skepticism regarding the sustainability of the AI boom.
