Second person involved in assault on woman captured in viral video in downtown Santiago handed over

Santiago.- David Jiménez Feliz, 18, who was identified as the second person involved in the assault on a woman that occurred in broad daylight on Salvador Cucurullón street corner Duarte, in the center of this city, surrendered voluntarily and visibly repentant on Tuesday afternoon. The event was captured in a video that later went viral on social media. The young man went crying to the office of General Jesús Rafael Tejada Tejada, Regional Director Cibao Central of the National Police, accompanied by his mother, where he expressed remorse for his alleged participation in the criminal act that generated outrage among citizens, who repudiated the action considering it a sign of the insecurity affecting the population. The young man’s mother, who was not identified, explained that she decided to turn him in to the authorities to prevent him from suffering reprisals on the street, while also stating that it is the first time her son has been involved in an event of that nature. Likewise, she asked the authorities to guarantee his rights during the process. Earlier this Tuesday, Cristofer Torres Ortiz, the other young man linked to the assault, had also surrendered, who was also presented before the high official. Torres Ortiz expressed remorse and alleged that he supposedly suffers from mental problems, also stating that he would have participated in the act induced by his companion.

In the audiovisual, widely spread on social media, two individuals are observed stripping a Haitian woman of her wallet. However, the victim managed to recover her belongings at the scene. Both young men were presented to General Tejada Tejada, who assured that the detainees’ rights would be respected in accordance with the law. They were subsequently transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM) for the corresponding legal purposes and their subsequent submission to the Public Ministry .
