Minister Faride Raful highlights the importance of the MISPA VIII regional forum as a stage for decision-making that strengthens security in the continent
Santiago de los Caballeros. — With the presence of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, and the participation of the ministers in charge of public security from the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Eighth Meeting of Ministers on Public Security Matters of the Americas (MISPA VIII) began this Wednesday. In welcoming the event, the Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s willingness to strengthen international cooperation and advance a shared agenda for citizen security.
In her speech, Raful highlighted that the country has presented a significant reduction in violence indicators, the result of comprehensive public policies, international cooperation, and a firm will for institutional transformation. Likewise, she outlined the challenges facing security management in the face of the challenges of today’s society.
The event, organized by the OAS and the Ministry of Interior and Police, brings together ministers, deputy ministers, and public security authorities from the hemisphere, as well as representatives of international organizations and civil society.
“The Dominican Republic has assumed an active role in the hemispheric agendas for violence prevention, police reform, and the fight against organized crime, which consolidates President Abinader’s commitment to strengthening democratic security and regional cooperation”, the minister expressed.
During the opening of MISPA VIII, President Luis Abinader highlighted the importance of hemispheric cooperation in the face of transnational threats that affect citizen security, such as organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and arms trafficking.
The first president also highlighted the progress made in the Dominican Republic, such as the historic reduction in the homicide rate, the implementation of an inter-institutional task force, police reform, the use of technology and artificial intelligence, and citizen participation as pillars of an integral security strategy.

“Cooperation in intelligence, investigation, information exchange and institutional strengthening should be the main objective of this meeting”, the president affirmed at the end of his speech.
During this edition of MISPA, the member states are focusing their deliberations on two strategic axes: police reform and transformation and cybersecurity, in response to the emerging challenges that affect citizen security in the hemisphere.
As a result of this summit, the Dominican Republic assumes the Presidency of the Subsidiary Technical Group of Police Management of the OAS, represented by Minister Faride Raful, who will be in charge of articulating regional policies and promoting cooperation and police professionalization in the hemisphere.
In her speech, Minister Raful expressed that the Dominican Republic is prepared to lead the major debates in the region on police reform, cybersecurity, with the certainty that the security of the future must be democratic and deeply human.
