Santo Domingo.– The Senate of the Republic formed a special commission to study the modifications to the Penal Code submitted by the senator for the Santo Domingo province, Antonio Taveras Guzmán, who proposes a series of changes aimed at strengthening fundamental rights and adapting the legislation to constitutional principles.
The commission will be responsible for analyzing the proposals presented by the legislator, evaluating their legal feasibility, and submitting a report to the Senate plenary for their eventual discussion.
Among the modifications proposed by Taveras is the incorporation of the crime of violation of privacy, with the purpose of offering greater guarantees against the improper disclosure of personal information and the unauthorized use of private data. Likewise, the senator proposes to review several articles related to public liberties and citizen rights.
Among his proposals, he also highlights the elimination of criminal penalties linked to expressions against public officials, considering that these provisions may conflict with constitutional principles such as freedom of expression and the right to citizen scrutiny of state management.

During the presentation of his proposals, Taveras maintained that the Penal Code must respond to the current challenges of Dominican society, strengthening the protection of fundamental rights and ensuring an adequate balance between criminal sanctions and individual liberties.

The legislator has maintained a critical position regarding previous processes of approval and modification of the Penal Code, arguing on different occasions the need for changes to be discussed with transparency and with the participation of all sectors involved.
The creation of this special commission comes at a time when various sectors continue to push for revisions to the penal legislation, one of the most debated regulations in the country over the last few years.
The commission is expected to soon begin study and consultation work to determine which of the proposed modifications could be incorporated into future reforms of the Dominican Penal Code.
