Santo Domingo, DR.– The senator for Puerto Plata, Ginnette Bournigal, requested that the Governor of the Central Bank, Héctor Valdez Albizu, and the members of the Monetary Board, evaluate a change in the color of the RD$200 and RD$1,000 banknotes due to the frequent confusion that, as she stated, they generate because of their similarity.
During an intervention in the ordinary session of the Senate, the legislator explained that she has witnessed situations in banking entities where employees have confused both banknotes during daily transactions.
Bournigal recounted that she even lived through similar experiences herself. On one occasion, while performing a banking transaction, she detected a mistake related to these bills in time. In another episode, she commented that while trying to give RD$200 to a young person, she ended up handing them a RD$1,000 bill by mistake.
“I ask the governor of the Central Bank and the members of the Monetary Board that, in compliance with their legal duties and prior to the appropriate studies, they arrange for a change in the color of the 200 and 1,000 peso banknotes, given the confusion they create in transactions carried out in banking institutions and other places of commercial activity,” the senator expressed while reading a letter from her seat.

The congressional representative maintained that the State must ensure that economic activities and the use of cash are carried out with the lowest possible level of risk for citizens, especially when there are elements that can lead to losses due to involuntary errors.
Likewise, it requested the Senate Secretariat to formally forward the communication to both the governor of the Central Bank and the members of the Monetary Board so that the proposal may be evaluated.
So far, the Central Bank has not issued an official position on the request. However, the initiative has reopened the debate on the need to strengthen the visual and security features of Dominican banknotes to facilitate their identification and reduce mistakes during commercial transactions.
