Senator Ginette Bournigal defends the Police: “The entire institution cannot be discredited because of one case”

Santo Domingo. The senator for Puerto Plata, Ginette Bournigal, came to the defense of the National Police amidst the debate sparked by the death of young Darlin Mercado during a police intervention in Herrera, stating that an isolated incident should not be used to discredit the entire institution.
During her speech in the Senate, the legislator stated that the police force has experienced significant progress in recent years and assured that it currently has better conditions, greater professionalization, and a process of institutional transformation.
“I am going to defend the Police; an honest, renewed Police force with professionals like the one I have in Puerto Plata”, expressed Bournigal, while maintaining that “society is going through a moment of high tension influenced by the impact of social media”.
The congresswoman stated that there is no justification for “discrediting a police force that has been improving day by day,” and recalled that in the past the institution faced much more serious situations, which is why she understands that the changes promoted in recent years have strengthened its performance.
Likewise, he pointed out that today’s National Police is “better, better paid, and good,” which is why he demanded respect for its members and asked that individual mistakes not define the image of the entire institution.
Bournigal’s statements come after the outrage generated by the death of Darlin Mercado, which occurred during a police operation, a case that has reignited criticism regarding the use of force and the need to accelerate the reform of the institution.

Following his intervention, the President of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, highlighted that the chamber was reviewing the Organic Law project for the National Police, an initiative that seeks to modernize the structure, organization, and functioning of the institution through a new special career regime and to strengthen the police reform process promoted by the State.
