Santo Domingo, RD. – Minister Sigmund Freund, in his capacity as political delegate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), called on political parties to debate and analyze the proposal of the Executive Branch to reduce by 50% the budget provided by the State. By participating in the La Plaza program, Freund indicated that this proposal goes hand in hand with the opposition’s request regarding the “level of sacrifice” that each sector should assume in the face of the crisis caused by the conflict between the United States and Iran. “It’s a matter of us proposing as a governing political party that we, the political parties, also make our share of sacrifices. The reality is that everyone is asking for sacrifices, the opposition parties are asking for sacrifices to be made,” Freund stated when participating, via telephone, in the program La Plaza. The minister highlighted that the Government, led by President Luis Abinader, what it did after the Council of Ministers was to present a plan to mitigate the effects of the crisis, after several sectors have demanded the presentation of this and that they are now prepared to listen to the arguments of the political parties.

Freund indicated that it should be subject to review by all political parties if, in this crisis situation, they are not able to contribute around 100 million pesos to the Dominican people. “What we want is for them to also contribute their share of sacrifice; of the 600 million pesos that the three majority parties are receiving this year, what we are proposing is that in what remains of the year, because four months have already passed, we sacrifice 50%; if we as political parties cannot contribute in this country, at this moment around 100 million, then we have to review ourselves as parties,” argued the official. Other measures Within the measures announced by the Government, in addition to the proposed reduction to the budget of political parties, there is the reduction of operating expenses, the containment in the acquisition of vehicles, with the exception of priority areas such as social assistance and food security; the decrease in minor repairs and maintenance and the rationalization of services and hiring. Also, there is a limitation of events to minimum costs, adjustments in textiles, clothing, travel expenses, tickets, and the rationalization of fuel and advertising; in addition to the verifiable reduction of current transfers to autonomous, decentralized organizations and public companies with the capacity to generate their own resources. Freund indicated that in the course of the next few days more details will be given on the specific percentages of each of these reductions. “Within the meeting of the Council of Ministers, a breakdown of each of the items was made. For example, the issue of advertising will be one of the largest items that will be impacted; the purchase of vehicles will be another item that will be reduced, among other measures,” he added. The minister emphasized that the government’s intention with these measures is to save about 40,000 million pesos to withstand the crisis.
