The National Health Service (SNS) inaugurated the Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Fetal Therapy Unit at the Doctor Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, a pioneering center that will allow surgeries to be performed on babies inside the womb to correct conditions that could compromise their lives before birth.
n” “nDuring the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the executive director of the SNS, Dr. Julio Landrón, highlighted that this is a unique unit in the country’s Public Health Network and in much of the region, equipped to perform fetal therapy procedures and intrauterine surgeries that offer new opportunities for life to hundreds of babies.
n” “nnn” “n“This unit will allow for intrauterine surgeries, an innovation that represents a transcendental step for our country. It offers an opportunity to families and mothers whose babies present some type of malformation or injury during pregnancy, allowing for surgical intervention without the need to interrupt the gestation,” he/she stated.

Likewise, he guaranteed institutional support to ensure the sustainability and strengthening of the services that the unit will offer.

n” “nSimilarly, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Fetal Surgery specialist, Dr. Ramiro Jesús Díaz, who will lead the new area, described the opening of the unit as one of the most important advances in Dominican medicine in recent years, by making procedures available to the population that previously forced families to seek care outside the country.
n” “nThe specialist recalled that many patients had to travel abroad to access these treatments, facing costs that ranged between 50 thousand and 80 thousand dollars, and now those procedures can be performed free of charge within the Public Health Network.
n” “nSimilarly, the authorities highlighted that the unit will offer comprehensive care from diagnosis to post-birth follow-up, through a highly specialized multidisciplinary team and the support of the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City and other national reference centers.

The new area is prepared to handle cases of fetal anatomical alterations, complicated multiple pregnancies, fetal anemia, congenital infections, and other high-complexity pathologies. Patients will be referred from the first weeks of gestation to receive specialized evaluation and timely treatment according to each condition.
