The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights called on the Iranian regime to immediately end the repression against protesters, following weeks of mass protests in the country. The statement was made during a special session of the Human Rights Council, convened in light of the seriousness of the reported events. During the meeting, deep concern was expressed about the mass arrests, the excessive use of force, and the situation of thousands of people arrested. International representatives denounced the existence of extrajudicial executions, forced disappearances, and a high number of victims, including minors. Human rights experts described the recent events as one of the most serious episodes of violence in the contemporary history of the country and called for the creation of international mechanisms to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the violations committed.

According to the data presented, the protests have left thousands dead and wounded. Iranian authorities, for their part, rejected the accusations and attributed the demonstrations to the action of violent groups supported from abroad, questioning the legitimacy of the international body’s session. The Human Rights Council approved a resolution demanding an immediate end to violence, the prohibition of torture and extrajudicial executions, as well as guarantees of fair trials in independent courts. The text also calls for the death penalty not to be applied for crimes committed by minors or for charges that do not constitute serious crimes under international law. Furthermore, it was decided to extend the mandate of the international mission in charge of investigating human rights violations in Iran, with the aim of documenting the abuses and advancing accountability.
