The US president calls the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”

Miami.- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, called the Strait of Hormuz, the area controlled by Iran through which a fifth of global crude oil passes, the “Trump Strait” this Friday, and compared this to renaming the Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’. “We are negotiating now (with Iran) and it would be great if we could do something, but they have to open it. They have to open the Strait of Trump, I mean, of Hormuz. Excuse me, I am so sorry, what a terrible mistake“, declared the president at the FII Priority event, organized by Saudi investors in Miami. Trump joked about renaming the strait, recalling that its opening is one of his main demands after almost a month of war with Iran, which has prevented transit through the area, which this week pushed Brent crude oil up to $112.57 per barrel for May deliveries, the highest price since June 2022.

“The ‘fake news’ will say that he (Trump) said it accidentally. There are no accidents with me, not too many,” the president expressed.

The Republican compared the renaming of the strait to the one he ordered at the beginning of his second term to call the Gulf of Mexico ‘Gulf of America’, something that appears on maps in the United States despite the criticism of the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president made these statements while insisting that Washington is negotiating with Iran, despite the fact that the Persian country has denied that it is having official conversations. Trump announced on Thursday that, to allow space for negotiations, he postponed until April 6 the ultimatum given to Iran to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, or else he will destroy its power plants. Moments before his statements, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, assured that “there are ships” passing through the strait. But the Marine Traffic organization indicated this Friday that two Chinese freighters heading there had to turn back for not having passage guarantees from Iran despite its strategic alliance with China.
