New York .- U.S. President Donald Trump asserted this Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to commercial traffic despite Iran announcing that it has blocked it.
The president denied in an interview with NBC News that the crossing is closed following the latest round of attacks launched this Saturday against the Islamic Republic.
“Last night we bombed them as hard as we could. They are very, very evil and sick people,” declared Trump.
The U.S. launched the third round of strikes against Tehran of the week following an Iranian attack on a Cyprus-flagged vessel in the strait.
As he explained, last night both countries reached a “perfect” agreement for the U.S.

However, “less than an hour” after finishing the conversations, Iran launched a drone against a ship.
Trump did not want to go into too much detail and preferred to focus on honoring Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away this Sunday.
US maintains that Iran “does not control” the Strait of Hormuz
For its part, the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) also assured that the passage is open “for all vessels” that wish to transit legally.

As noted, U.S. forces are “positioned and prepared” to ensure freedom of navigation.
Before the latest attacks, Iran announced the closure of the strait “until further notice”.
The Revolutionary Guard asserted that any foreign interference to open an “illegal route” in the region will receive a forceful response, as reported by Iranian state radio IRIB.
