Trump threatens to attack Iran’s power plants if it doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz

New York.- US President Donald Trump threatened this Saturday to attack Iran’s power plants if the Islamic republic does not “fully” open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

“If Iran does not fully open, without threats, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 HOURS from this precise moment, the United States will attack and raze its various power plants, starting with the largest one,” the president wrote on his Truth Social network.

Trump’s message comes after the US Armed Forces announced this Saturday that they have weakened Iran’s ability to “threaten freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz, after attacking this week an underground arsenal located along the country’s coast. The aforementioned installation was used to store anti-ship cruise missiles and other materials, according to a video posted on social media by the leader of the US Central Command, Brad Cooper. The Strait of Hormuz is the only maritime passage between the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and 20% of global crude oil exports pass through it.

Since the beginning of the war, the attempts by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to prevent the passage of ships whose cargoes may benefit the U.S. and Israel have greatly diminished the traffic of cargo ships in Hormuz, driving up oil prices. Trump has urged NATO partners or Asian allies like South Korea or Japan, which are heavily dependent on crude oil from the region, to provide military support in the strait to secure navigation through it, but for the moment none have committed to sending assets to the area. The war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran since February 28, when the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was assassinated, is about to complete a month without Trump clarifying how long he anticipates the conflict will last.
