United States.- U.S. President Donald Trump announced today an additional 50% tariff on Canadian products to, as he alleged, counteract trade disadvantages present in the relationship with his northern neighbor.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed three proclamations to impose additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products in response to Canada’s discriminatory treatment of U.S. products,” reads a fact sheet published on the official White House website.
From Washington’s point of view, this measure “offsets the burden and disadvantage to U.S. commerce caused by Canada’s discriminatory treatment and levels the playing field for crucial U.S. exports: automobiles, alcohol, and dairy products.”

The document specifies that “tariffs will not apply to energy, potash” or goods already subject to tariffs, in a list that includes steel, aluminum, copper, trucks and automobiles, lumber, pharmaceuticals, fish, and critical minerals.
As the basis for the decision, it is indicated that “between April 2025 and March 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. vehicles decreased by approximately 22%, or $5.6 billion, compared to the same period in 2024-2025,” while in the case of imports of U.S. alcoholic beverages, a decrease of 81% is noted in the same period.
