Typhoon Bavi moves towards the southern islands of Japan with winds of more than 200 km/h

Tokyo.- Typhoon Bavi is advancing with wind gusts of more than 200 kilometers per hour toward the northernmost islands of the Japanese archipelago, where, according to forecasts by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), it could make landfall early this Saturday.

Bavi, the ninth typhoon of this year in Japanese terminology and classified as “violent” due to its strong winds, was located this Friday morning south of Okinawa Prefecture, in the Philippine Sea.

According to the NHK television network, the typhoon has already forced the cancellation of more than 160 flights, most of them from the airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) originating from or destined for Naha airport, the capital of Okinawa.

In light of the advance of this storm, authorities urged the local population to take extreme precautions due to the possibility that it may cause adverse weather conditions, such as heavy swells, torrential rains, and landslides.

In addition, the Sakishima Islands are expected to experience winds strong enough to cause some houses to collapse, reports the Japanese television network NHK.

The tropical storm will then head towards Taiwan and mainland China, according to forecasts. Throughout Thursday, Chinese authorities raised the emergency response as Bavi approached, while Taiwanese authorities issued a maritime alert.

Typhoons are recurrent in Japan, as well as in the Philippines, southeastern China, and Taiwan during the summer and autumn seasons, when the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean foster the formation of cyclones that, at times, cause significant damage and disruptions to transportation and economic activities.
