Uruguay in talks with the United States to receive deported individuals

Montevideo.- The Government of Uruguay is in talks with the United States regarding the possibility of receiving people of different nationalities who are deported from that country for immigration reasons.

This was confirmed this Wednesday to the EFE Agency by sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who detailed that for the moment it is only a dialogue that has been open for many months, but that there is no closed agreement.

Likewise, they pointed out that Uruguay is not the only one maintaining a dialogue on this issue with the United States, but that several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are doing so.

Migrants in Uruguay

According to data from the latest census, about 120,000 migrants live in Uruguay. Most of these are Argentines, followed by Venezuelans and Cubans. In addition, it is estimated that the number of people born outside the country who arrived in the 2018-2023 period amounts to about 44,000.

In 2024, Uruguay created the Residency by Roots program, which allowed for the regularization of the status of some 20,000 migrants—the majority of whom were born in Cuba—who were thus able to process their residency.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed this decision.

Uruguay received more than 16,000 asylum requests in 2025. In April of this year, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Valeria Csukasi, indicated that they had accumulated 30,000 unprocessed applications, which meant “a huge challenge.”
