LA VEGA, DR.- The Cultured, Olympic and Carnival province of La Vega gave one of the greatest displays of national sports leadership when its athletes, from different disciplines, participated in the route through its streets carrying the Olympic torch of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026.

The vegan town lived an unforgettable moment, in which, for a good while, its avenues and streets paralyzed daily activities and citizens were able to see up close their great sports heroes from different eras and sports, who wrote pages of glory representing the country both nationally and internationally.
Renowned former athletes, multiple medal winners, and high-profile vegan sports personalities such as former judoka María García spent some time carrying the “Olympic flame,” which travels across the entire country through its 31 provinces until reaching the National District (the 32 territorial divisions of the Dominican Republic), in Santo Domingo, to celebrate the 2026 CAC Games, which will take place from July 24 to August 8 of this year.
In addition to García, there were the young tennis players from La Vega, Enmanuel Muñoz Veras, the fourth-ranked player on the Dominican national field tennis team, and his brother Pedro Muñoz Veras, who carried the Olympic torch during the route through different streets of La Vega.
Both are children of Vice Admiral (ret.) José Roberto Muñoz Monción, ARD, and Mrs. Evelyn Veras de Muñoz, an illustrious married couple from the city of La Vega.
Likewise, the Dominican Sports Immortal, Professor Fernando Teruel, who is currently the technical vice minister of the Ministry of Sports; and the former sprinter and relay athlete of the 70s, Porfirio -Popo- Veras Mercedes, toured the avenues and streets of La Vega;
Also, the Sports Immortals, former weightlifter Rafael -El Pollito- Ortega, and judoka Andrea Hernández; Vice Admiral (ret.) Radhamés Lora Salcedo, from judo; José Coronado, from cycling; Luis López, former president of Fedotri; and Cristian Despradel, from swimming, among others.
Among the vegan personalities were the Civil Governor, Luisa Jiménez de la Mota; and the mayor, Mrs. Amparo Custodio.
