Caracas.- The Government of Venezuela is working on the repair of nearly 4,000 homes in La Guaira (north), the state most affected by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes on June 24, regional governor Alejandro Terán reported this Tuesday.
“We are rehabilitating 3,938 homes throughout the state that have been classified, within the habitability inspections, with the color yellow (minor damage). They did not suffer structural damage, but rather damage to the masonry,” the governor declared to the state channel Venezolana de Televisión.
In addition, Terán said that his governorship is assisting “more than 12,000 families” in 28 temporary camps in La Guaira, set up for the thousands of victims left by the earthquake.
Assessments of affected homes
Following the earthquakes, the Government established a color-coded marking system for buildings: green (safe), yellow (alert and inspection), red (high risk-prohibited zone).
Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Parliament and brother of the acting leader of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, reported that the authorities have already evaluated around 43,679 homes following the earthquakes.

Likewise, according to these figures, out of a total of 41,624 affected homes, there are 25,325 habitable (green), 9,866 restricted (yellow), and 6,433 at “high risk” (red).
The World Bank estimates direct physical damage at $19.6 billion and recently warned that a slow reconstruction could hinder the oil-producing country’s economic recovery over the next decade. EFE
