Venezuelan government asks engineers to join housing repair plan after earthquakes

Caracas.- The Government of Venezuela asked structural calculation companies and civil engineers this Thursday to join a plan that will promote repair and reinforcement projects for buildings damaged by the earthquakes on June 24.

To this end, the Venezuelan Minister of Transport, Francisco Garcés, urged them to register on a website and then complete a training and certification process to become part of projects assigned by the Government.

In a video posted on his X account, Garcés also called on senior civil engineering and architecture students to sign up as assistants and work with specialists in the inspection of buildings, as well as in projects for the repair or reinforcement of homes damaged after the earthquakes.

Last Friday, Venezuela and the global engineering firm Miyamoto International, based in the United States, signed a contract that establishes in a first phase the removal of three million metric tons of debris generated by the devastating double earthquake.

According to the Venezuelan Ministry of Communication, the agreement also “includes the exchange of technical knowledge, the strengthening of construction standards in the country, and the implementation of advanced protocols for disaster prevention and the protection of the population“.

Following the earthquakes in June, Miyamoto International, which is also dedicated to disaster risk management, has been in Venezuela “monitoring conditions and sharing engineering updates, field observations, and response resources as new information becomes available,” according to its website.

The Government has also worked with the Association of Engineers to evaluate the buildings affected by the earthquakes.

The earthquakes have left at least 6,509 dead, 14,239 homes with moderate damage, and 11,001 homes with severe damage, according to the latest official report, published on August 24, which marked two months since the tragedy.
