Santo Domingo.– The Vice Minister of Technical and Pedagogical Services of the Ministry of Education (Minerd), Ancell Scheker Mendoza, stated that the National Debate Championship represents the institution’s commitment to strengthening the communication skills, critical thinking, and leadership of secondary school students.
During the start of the V National Debate Championship, Scheker highlighted that the initiative brings together hundreds of young people from the country’s 18 educational regions, who reached the national phase after overcoming a preparation process that began in their educational centers.
“This initiative seeks to strengthen the skills of secondary level students in communication, argumentation, the organization of ideas, and in their logical, critical, and creative thinking,” he/she expressed.
The official pointed out that the debate represents a formative experience that allows participants to develop the ability to communicate their ideas assertively, listen to different points of view, and build solid arguments backed by evidence.
“It is a wonderful experience that allows students to develop the ability to communicate assertively, listen, and organize their ideas to present arguments with evidence and solidity,” he/she maintained.
Scheker explained that the championship is the result of a formative process that is developed from the educational centers, passing through the districts and regional educational offices, until culminating in the national competition.
Likewise, he highlighted that this initiative not only strengthens the students’ academic skills, but also opens up the possibility for them to represent the Dominican Republic in international competitions.

“It is a great opportunity that we are giving students to develop in this area of debate. They also have the possibility to represent the country in international scenarios, and this is a commitment that the Ministry of Education is making to develop the skills and talent of our young people, providing them with opportunities that, without a doubt, will significantly mark their lives,” he stated.
The V National Debate Championship brings together 78 teams, made up of 234 students from the country’s 18 educational regions, who will compete throughout the week in debate rounds on topics of national and international interest, with the aim of strengthening critical thinking, communication, argumentation, and civic education.
