This intensified with social media, where some took advantage of the exposure of their love relationships to generate interaction or money. However, Joseph points out that now, instead of showing romantic photos or explicit declarations about their boyfriends, many women prefer “more subtle” insinuations, showing certain parts of their partners’ bodies or, even, sometimes directly blurring their faces.

Possible reasons

The impulse to hide the relationship can have several reasons. The writer explains that many women seek to preserve their autonomy and reject that their worth depends on being in a relationship. In addition, some fear that exposing their relationship on social media could generate envy or regret in the event of a breakup.

Although Joseph acknowledges that there is no type of “shame” in falling in love, he warns that the traditional idea of love, especially in heterosexual relationships, is being publicly questioned. And at the same time, he highlights, this trend is occurring alongside a movement where singlehood is being redefined as a valid and empowering lifestyle.
