Zohran Mamdani Sworn in as New York City Mayor

The socialist democrat makes history by becoming the first mayor of South Asian origin.

Zohran Mamdani was inaugurated on January 1st as the 112th mayor of New York, USA, becoming the first Muslim to govern the city.

Mamdani officially took the oath at midnight on Wednesday in a private ceremony held in an abandoned subway station near City Hall. “It is the honor and privilege of a lifetime“, said the Mayor.

The public event will take place on Thursday afternoon at City Hall, in a ceremony led by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.

The Indian-American socialist Democrat makes history by becoming, at 34, the first mayor of South Asian origin and the youngest to hold the position in a century. Her campaign focused primarily on promises aimed at reducing the cost of living for New Yorkers, such as childcare and free buses, rent freezes for people living in rent-regulated apartments, and new affordable housing, measures that would largely be funded by raising taxes on the wealthiest.
