New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told Mexican migrants celebrating Independence Day in Brooklyn that they are welcome in the city, referring to the neighborhood of Sunset Park as “PueblaYork,” a nod to the large community of Mexican immigrants from Puebla living in the area.
Mamdani delivered the remarks Tuesday, September 15, during the Mexican Independence Day celebrations in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
“I come before you as the mayor of our city to say that here, in PueblaYork, you are home. And you will always have a home here,” Mamdani said during the event.
The mayor also said that the city’s clinics, schools and shelters would remain open to everyone, regardless of immigration status. His remarks came as Mexican communities across New York gathered for celebrations marking the country’s Independence Day.
Mamdani said that, when he looked at those attending the celebration, he saw a crowd of New Yorkers and expressed his appreciation for the Mexican community’s contributions to the city.

“I come to say that we are proud of you. I come to say that we are grateful to you,” Mamdani said before concluding his remarks with a call celebrating the Mexican community.
The appearance followed Mamdani’s participation in the Mexican Independence Day Parade in Sunset Park on September 13, where he served as grand marshal. He became the first New York City mayor to participate in the parade, according to multiple reports. (N+)
The annual parade, now in its 32nd edition, has been held in Sunset Park since 1994 and celebrates Mexican culture, traditions and the contributions of Mexican New Yorkers.
