Abinader reiterates support for Venezuelan democracy after capture of Nicolás Maduro

Santo Domingo. President Luis Abinader stated that the Dominican Government is closely following the evolution of events in Venezuela, following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, and reiterated the country’s firm stance in favor of democratic restoration in that South American nation. Abinader recalled that he never recognized the legitimacy of Maduro’s proclamation as president, after the elections held in July 2024, considering that said process did not reflect the popular will expressed at the polls.

In that context, he highlighted that the country promoted the Declaration of Santo Domingo, signed in August 2024, through which several states demanded respect for the citizen vote and the strengthening of the democratic order in Venezuela.

“The Dominican government has been consistent with its position in defense of democracy and fundamental rights,” expressed the president, while emphasizing that the solidarity between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples is historic.

Abinader also stated the Dominican Republic’s willingness to collaborate with efforts that contribute to the restoration of democracy, peace, and national concord in Venezuela, in coordination with the international community. “Dominican Republic will always be on the side of democracy. Wherever, whenever, and before whomever,” emphasized the Head of State, reaffirming the country’s foreign policy line in the face of institutional crises in the region.
