Santo Domingo.- The Dominican communicator Aneudys Santos offered this Sunday a public apology to the United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah Francis Campos, for the offensive comments he made against her approximately two months ago, acknowledging that he acted wrongly by questioning personal aspects related to her faith.

In a video released on his digital platforms, Santos admitted that the terms used “were not the most appropriate” and expressed his regret, ensuring that he first had to apologize to the diplomat “as a human being and a lady” and then for her status as a representative of the U.S. Government.

“I am not one, honestly, to question the spiritual conviction of absolutely anyone. If the ambassador is a Christian, amen, that is phenomenal,” stated the communicator, who acknowledged that he used “erratic” expressions, with qualifiers he considered “undeserved” and “unnecessary.”

Likewise, he appealed to the Christian message of forgiveness and asked Campos to accept his apologies, stating that his intention was to publicly correct the mistake made.

After offering the apology, Santos explained that the origin of his reaction was his disagreement with the ambassador’s participation in the public debate regarding the Dominican Penal Code and freedom of expression. However, he clarified that he maintains his support for citizen demonstrations on that issue, although he questioned those who, according to him, seek to obtain political benefits or personal positioning by taking advantage of that debate.

The communicator also rejected any insinuation that his criticisms had been motivated by third parties. “No one tells me what to do. The mistake is entirely mine,” he stated, while assuming responsibility for his declarations.

Finally, Santos assured that his differences are not due to a stance against the United States Government and stated that, on the contrary, he has supported policies promoted by President Donald Trump on several occasions, reiterating that his main mistake was having questioned the ambassador’s spiritual life, something he acknowledged as inappropriate.

The commentator’s response comes after a post by the American diplomat in which she defends freedom of expression regarding the video in which she is described as “incompetent,” “villainous,” and “frivolous.”
